HTS - Eco Committee - Eco Schools

I thought before I start giving you updates of how were doing in our eco-committee meetings; I would explain what we as a school are trying to achieve.

At school we are aiming to get the status of an 'Eco School'. We are following the Eco Schools UK format to achieve this.

You may wonder what is this? This is a Seven Step Framework which has been made into a simple environmental management system. This lets pupils like myself to introduce and lead environmental actions and education in our school.

As pupils we work through the Seven Steps and we are able to pick several of the ten Eco-Schools topics to work on.

All the Eco-Schools topics helps pupils engage with environmental issues that are important to us, our school and our local community.

The Seven Steps framework supports pupils of all ages and abilities to work together to plan, deliver, monitor and evaluate environmental actions in their school.

The Eco-Schools programme never tells us what the environmental actions or projects that our school should work on. As pupils we take control, to work on the issues they we are passionate about.

The Severn Steps

As a school we Work through each of the seven steps and then we can apply for Eco-Schools Green Flag accreditation.

Below, is a brief summary of each step;

  1. Eco-Committee, a group of students and adults responsible for all things Eco-Schools is formed.
  2. Environmental Review, review learning environments and provide inspiration to Eco-Committees.
  3. Action Plan, a plan for environmental actions in your school.
  4. Curriculum Links, including environmental issues in your school’s.
  5. Informing and Involving, including all pupils, staff members and your local community in Eco-Schools work.
  6. Monitoring and Evaluation, measuring the impact of the projects in your Action Plan.
  7. Eco-Code, a rallying call that everyone can get behind!

Ten Eco-Schools Topic

When creating an 'Action Plan', Eco-Committees choose three topics (five topics for those renewing an existing Eco-Schools Green Flag) to work on.

Eco-Committees select the three (or five) topics they would like to work on from the Ten Eco-Schools topics below.

  • Biodiversity, caring for all plants, animals and insects.
  • Energy, reducing energy use and investigating greener energy sources.
  • Global Citizenship, working with others on local and global issues.
  • Healthy Living, improving mental and physical well-being.
  • Litter, taking action to reduce litter in your local area and beyond.
  • Marine, protecting rivers, canals, lakes, oceans and the plants and animals that inhabit them.
  • School Grounds, enhancing your learning environment.
  • Transport, travelling in an environmentally-friendly manner.
  • Waste, refusing, reducing, reusing, repairing and recycling.
  • Water, protecting our most important natural resource.
