π» Eco-Friendly Halloween π
As a family we love Halloween it is a great time for spooky family fun, but sadly it is often full of plastic.
Halloween Costumes
Me and Roshan loving dressing up! It can be great fun dressing up as your favourite spooky character! However, I read in a magazine for kids that a recent survey found that Halloween costumes are often made up of 90% plastic. Now that is scary!!
Around 7 million Halloween costumes are thrown away each year in the UK!! That is such a waste of not only money but resources!
This year why don't you try and avoid this by making your own costume from old clothes or cardboard. Do a costume swap with friends and family (that's what we have done this year as a family). You could also rent a costume just for the night.
Another way you can avoid waste is by painting on a scary face. But remember to choose a natural, non-toxic face paint that washes off easily. You can transform into a ghastly ghost or a skeleton without the plastic waste!
Pumpkins
Halloween would not be the same without a pumpkin. I love carving pumpkins and decorating the house with them. But now I am thinking of all the waste this may cause. What do you do with the leftovers? I have researched that Sadly, 8 million pumpkins will be thrown out after Halloween in the UK alone.
What could you do with the pumpkins? How about using the leftovers to make a pumpkin pie or soup? Also, roasted pumpkin seeds make a quick and easy snack!
Reusable Treat Containers
Always remember reduce, reuse, recycle! To store the treats in you could Upcycle a plastic tub, an old pillowcase or a tote bag by decorating it with a spooky design. It will last for many years to come! My mum decorated us a tote bag each a few years ago and we use it every year now.
Treats
Why not this year do some home-baked treats Instead of individual plastic-wrapped sweets. You could bake some cupcakes or your own Halloween cookies. You can then put your spooky designs on them!
Decorations
Why not get creative and make decorations that are recyclable! You can make paper ghosts, bats and garlands. You can make an autumnal Halloween wreath made from twigs and leaves from what you can find on an autumn walk. Create autumn leaf lanterns using old jam jars and leaves. You can transform milk jugs into ghost lanterns also Use brown string to create spider webs. But remember to keep hold of these decorations as you can use them the following year.
Wishing all my readers a Spooky Happy Halloween Shaan Dulay π
