COP 26

 Everyone on the news and TV is talking about COP26 and some of you may be wondering what does this exactly mean?

COP stands for 'Conference of the Parties'. The 'parties' refers to the 197 nations that have all signed up to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

This was first set up in 1994 to prevent the actions of humans from causing dangerous levels of climate change.

This years COP will be its 26th meeting, that is why it is called COP26. It will be held this year in Glasgow from 1st to 12th November.

The COP is VERY IMPORTANT as all the countries around the world can make agreements and commitments on how best to tackle and take action on climate change.

Watch this video which will explain from a child's point a view what COP26 is;

Climate change is a very serious issue which we all need to look at. This is a problem for us all and we should all try and do whatever we can to try and help our planet. As I always say 'small changes lead to big changes...'

The planet is heating up because of human activity that has had a direct impact on damaging it. If you read my previous blog on 'Climate Change' this will give you some more information on what exactly Climate Change is; What Is Climate Change? (shaansecoworld.blogspot.com)

The scientist and all the evidence that has been found has stated that if we don't change things quickly, the world will heat up by more than 2 degrees Celsius. This would cause big problems for all animals and humans that live on this planet.

At the COP26 a plan of action needs to be done to see how all the countries around the world can help make changes. They also need to make sure that all countries contribute and that it is fair for everyone.

As the above video shows that will be a lot of people that attend this conference. In the UK the President of COP26 is Alok Sharma and his job is to set the agenda for the conference and make sure that the conference commits to making big changes. There will be world leaders from countries around the world. Negotiators will be there to advise world leaders to make agreements between countries. There also will be some observers that will attend, this includes environmental organisations, youth groups, faith groups, indigenous people and journalists. They will also try and bring discussions forward about what is important.

Sir David Attenborough (my hero) will also be attending he is the COP26 People's Advocate Sir David Attenborough, COP26 People's Advocate - YouTube

Many of us, like myself, will not be directly involved in the COP26, however we are indirectly. If we all make a pledge, a small promise of something we are going to do to try and help the environment we can all make a big impact.

One of the pledges we are making as a family; me and my brother are going to try and plant as many wildflowers as we can over the next year.

Where we live we are very lucky and are right next to a nature reserve. Where we can see abandoned space or land that appears neglected we are going to bring it to life with the wildflowers. If you read my previous blog post on bees this will show how important this is Why Are Bees So Important? (shaansecoworld.blogspot.com)

What pledge will you be making?
